Ultrasound Preparation Guide: What You Need to Know Before Your Scan

Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that helps in diagnosing and monitoring various medical conditions. While most ultrasound procedures do not require advanced preparation, some specific exams need certain guidelines to ensure accurate results.

If your doctor has given you an order for an ultrasound, please bring it along to your appointment. Below is a detailed guide on how to prepare for different types of ultrasound exams.


Abdominal Ultrasound & Abdominal Doppler Ultrasound

(Includes Liver, Spleen, Gallbladder, Kidneys, Pancreas, Abdominal Aorta, Biliary System)
Exam Duration: 30 minutes | ⏰ Total Visit Time: About 1.5 hours

Preparation:

Adults: Do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before the exam.
Children: No food or drinks for 4 hours before the exam or skip one meal.
Medications: You may take your medication with a small sip of water.
Diabetic Patients: If you take insulin, continue as prescribed unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.


Pelvic Ultrasound

(Evaluates Uterus, Ovaries, Fallopian Tubes, and Urinary Bladder)
Exam Duration: 30 minutes | ⏰ Total Visit Time: About 1.5 hours

Preparation:

✅ Eat normally before your exam.
✅ Drink 1 liter of water at least one hour before the exam.
✅ Do not empty your bladder before the examination.
For females: A transvaginal ultrasound may be performed as part of the study for better imaging.


Bladder Ultrasound

Preparation:

✅ Both male and female patients should drink 1 liter of water one hour before the exam.
✅ Do not urinate before the exam so that your bladder is full during imaging.


Prostate Ultrasound (Transrectal)

Preparation:

Two hours before the exam, cleanse with a Fleet enema #1.
✅ Follow standard prostate ultrasound preparation.


Trans-Abdominal Ultrasound

Exam Duration: Varies

Preparation:

✅ Drink 1 liter of any liquid one hour before the exam.
✅ Do not urinate before the exam to ensure a full bladder.


Hysterosonogram (Ultrasound for Uterus Evaluation)

✅ Avoid unprotected sexual intercourse during the first 10 days of your menstrual cycle before the procedure.

Breast Biopsy

✅ Stop taking aspirin, blood thinners, and vitamin E 7 days before the biopsy.

Liver Biopsy / Paracentesis / Thoracentesis / Prostate Biopsy

✅ Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your biopsy.
✅ Stop taking aspirin, blood thinners, and vitamin E 7 days before the biopsy.
