A Landmark Moment: The First Baby Born

In September 2014, the world celebrated a historic milestone. A 36-year-old Swedish woman who had received a uterus transplant from a 61-year-old living donor gave birth to a healthy baby boy at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. This was the first successful birth from a uterine transplant — a moment that shifted the landscape of reproductive possibilities.

The team, led by Dr. Mats Brännström, had carefully followed the woman through fertility treatments, embryo implantation, and pregnancy monitoring. The baby was born via cesarean section, healthy and full-term, proving that a transplanted uterus could support a growing fetus through to delivery.

Global Impact and Expanding Success

Following Sweden’s success, several countries — including the United States, Brazil, India, the UK, and Turkey — have launched uterine transplant programs. A notable milestone came in 2017, when Brazil announced the first baby born from a uterus transplanted from a deceased donor, demonstrating that even deceased donors could be a viable option.

So far, dozens of successful uterine transplants and live births have been recorded worldwide, turning what was once an experimental concept into a life-changing clinical reality.

The Future of Uterine Transplants

While uterine transplants are still considered experimental and are typically reserved for clinical trials, continued research and technological advancements are making the procedure more accessible. Researchers are also exploring bioengineered uteruses using stem cells, which could eliminate the need for immunosuppressive drugs and donor availability constraints.


The first successful uterine transplant birth marks a powerful symbol of hope for women with AUFI. As medical teams continue refining the procedure and expanding its reach, uterine transplantation is emerging as a new frontier in fertility medicine — transforming once-impossible dreams into reality.
