Fetal position

Image
Ultrasound examination has ranked #1 choice of exam for many diagnosis probably due to it's none invasiveness, detail and safety when compared to other forms of medical imaging. Little wonder it's largely employed in antenatal care. The reportage of obstetrics exam has emphasis on many things but less is said of the importance of fetal position, most times when fetal position is indicated it's usually not detailed enough to help surgical decisions. During pregnancy, the developing baby moves into several different positions. As labor approaches, some positions are safer than others. According to medical news toda y, The ideal position for a fetus just before labor is the anterior position. In this position, the fetus's head points toward the ground and they are facing the woman's back. Most fetuses settle into this position by the last month of pregnancy. The anterior position is also known as a vertex, cephalic, or occiput ante...

Politics: Atiku entered US as office aide to Saraki

Image
There has been serious outburst from the APC and Buhari camp concerning the journey made by the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar to the US. Online news media quote the president's media adviser in his reation to the Atiku development that "He travel to the US being listed as an office aide to the senatS president". The veracity of the claim is not immediately known but it is now certain that the assertion that Atiku can not travel to the US is now a fallacy. What every Nigerian want is good governance not tales of who is capable of traveling to the US.

Medical news: Monkey in human body

Image
Somewhere in North-central Nigeria a woman was delivered of a strange looking baby.  The woman who came in with labor pains had some difficulty in the labor after the membrane was ruptured. With the fetus presenting with feet the obstetrician manage to deliver the baby which turned out to be a monkey in human body. While the cause of this strange occurrence is not immediately known many have attributed it to some mystical power. The strange baby died few minutes after birth weighing 4kg. The woman is in the postnatal word making a good recovery. The case was unbooked so there was no ultrasound record of the baby. Many doctors and sonographers have argued this to be anencephaly given reasons of cranial displasia and all other sonographic  expectation and features, but this seems to be a completely formed cranial bone with and awkwardly extended ears. below is a picture of an anencephaly I personally followed up from second trimester till birth. ...

Rare medical case: Sacrococcygeal teratoma

Image
In what appears to be a rare male pelvic pathology and concluded to be sacrococcygeal teratoma, gave us some insight into seminal vesical cyst. Seminal vesical cyst is a very rare pathology in male reproductive system. According to Dr Mohammed Hossain of Shristy Institute for health science and technology , Cysts of the lower male genitourinary tract are uncommon and usually benign.  These cysts have different anatomic origins and may be associated with a variety of genitourinary abnormalities and symptoms. Various complications may be associated with these cysts, such as urinary tract infection, pain, postvoiding incontinence, recurrent epididymitis, prostatitis, and hematospermia, and they may cause infertility. Understanding the embryologic development and normal anatomy of the lower male genitourinary tract can be helpful in evaluating these cysts and in tailoring an approach for developing a differential diagnosis. There are two main groups of cys...

Ridiculous Ultrasound request

Bedside ultrasound has greatly improved patient care over the years and alleviated the invasive procedures which may not be necessary most times. While this non-invasive practice seem to be a blessing many practitioners may have knowingly or unknown abuse it's use. Sonography is a medical profession which has trained professionals working with other colleagues to achieve accurate diagnosis, while not all medical practitioners are Sonographers, most times they make certain request for ultrasound examination that may look very ridiculous to the Sonographer. Below are some ridiculous ultrasound request a sonographer may have encountered. 1. R/o Cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD), this is usually determined via physical examination during active labor. Ultrasound is used in estimating fetal size but not totally reliable for determining fetal weight. A physical examination that measures pelvic size can often be the most accurate method...

Medical news: The tragedy of Medical practice

Image
The knowledge of medicine has impacted on the human race more than any other discipline in science, it would be an understatement to say this aspect of human knowledge is divine. The increase in knowledge and technology has help saved many unseemingly impossible situations. In the past breech fetal presentation would be passed for a spiritual affliction, wherefore the patient will be managed until she passed or a miracle happens and she delivers. But with the successes of invasion surgery many lives have been saved and human life couldn't have been any better. As with the blessings so comes the curses. There has been an increasing reports of stolen organs during surgery which is rampant in some countries in the middle East and Asia (names withheld). The latest of this report is stolen kidneys during a ceasarean section (CS). A woman was reported to have had CS four years ago, after which she has complained of persistent abdominal pain, unfortunately it was disco...

Medical news: Rare Medical condition of the parotid gland

Image
Castleman's disease, a rare benign lymphoproliferative disorder, may be localized or widespread, with the localized form having two histopathological types.   The hyaline vascular type is seen in the majority of cases, commonly presenting with only pressure symptoms in young individuals. Parotid Castleman's disease is extremely rare. To the best of the authors' knowledge, fewer than 20 cases have been reported in world literature so far. There has been only one previous case report describing the ultrasonographic findings in parotid Castleman's disease, described in a 50-year-old man in whom ultrasound showed an ill-defined, heterogeneous, partly cystic mass with multiple intraparotid and cervical lymph nodes.   Ultrasound image of Castleman's disease See arrows In the present case, ultrasound showed a more homogeneously hypoechoeic mass with surrounding hypoechoeic intraparotid and cervical lymph nodes. The findings are more consistent ...
